51 | Education: reported "going to school" on 1881 census Occupation: farmer,( had part of one leg removed in a threshing accident) Statement of death particulars - obtained 25 May 1992 - date of death = 26 Feb 1946 - cause of death = not recorded - burial = Hammond River - informant - Mrs. James Buckley, daughter - father = William Lester, birthplace = England - mother = ? Saunders, birthplace = NB Marriage certificate - wittness were John o Lester and Pearl Wood - minister was W O Raymond, rector of St. Mary's Church "Thomas E. Gilbert Tisdale, who was the Dutch vice-consul 1872-1875 and was also consul for Panama. He was a well known merchant in Saint John and was also involved with insurance and was for some time Deputy Water Sheriff and Secretary of the Saint John Agricultural Society." a quote from a Ruby Cusack column - I wonder if this is the surce for Humphrey's name? Humphrey Gilbert Tisdale Lester was born on Sunday 29 Jul 1877 in Nauwigewauk, New Brunswick. No church or civil record of Humphrey’s birth or christening has been found. Thomas E. Gilbert Tisdale, who was the Dutch vice-consul 1872-1875 and was a well known merchant in Saint John may have been the source for Humphrey’s name as his mother was of Dutch decent. Humphrey married Harriet Isabella Wood on 26 Nov 1902 in St Mary's Church, St. John County, N. B. Harriet was known as Hattie. She was the daughter of Charles Jacob Wood and Jane Augusta Baxter. The witnesses were John O. Lester, brother of the groom and Pearl Wood, sister of the bride. The minister was W. O. Raymond, rector of St. Mary's Church, Simmonds Parish, St. John County, N.B. The Kings County News of January 7 1897 reports "Robert Wood lotteried a fine driving sleigh on Monday evening. Humphrey Lester held the fortunate number." Since Robert was Harriet's Uncle, did Humphrey use the sleigh to court her? Humphrey was a farmer and owned 40 acres of land that he had purchased from his cousin James Shaw Saunders. He had part of one leg amputated as a result of a threshing accident Humphrey died on Tuesday 26 Feb 1946 in Nauwigewauk, N.B., almost exactly one year after his wife died. He was 69 years of age. The cause of death was myocarditis, epicardial haemorrhage. He was also suffering from Potts disease of the Spine, which is a form of tuberculosis. He was buried in Hammond River Anglican Cemetery, Hammond River, Kings County, New Brunswick. | Lester, Humphrey Gilbert Tisdale (I4)

Then Gramma and the three girls came. The family went to Innisfail. Will counldn't get the land he wanted so he came back to Airdrie. Grampa was a butcher in England and after a few years sold the land at Innisfail and moved to Airdrie too. He operated a slaughter house and butcher shop. It was later burned with the house. 76 | Info from Margaret McKinnon She apparently had three children before she married Robert McQueen. Did two of these come to Canada to settle near James McQueen? There is land owned by a Fingland near JMs in 1875. One of the half sisters became a Mrs. Stewart. She had two sons, Jim and ? Info Aug 2001 - The three children were born after Robert McQueen died in 1808 with the father being un-named in parish records. 78 | info probably from Ornal : was a member of 32 Royal Fusiliers on board the "Royal Arthur" (not sailor, fighter)(found not to be a Fusilier, summer 1997) -born within the sound of Big Ben - could have a brother Harry info from Auntie Gladys - Father joined the "Royal Marines" and sailed to Canada on the HMS Royal Arthur which was commisioned March 2, 1893. info from Lois - He left the ship in Victoria and changed his name. We think the name was BOWSER. He came to Calgary to the Alberta Hotel where Grandma was working. info from Norm Jean - Have pursued the Bowser*Pine line trying to locate them on the Sommerset House marriage records. Was led astray for a while with data from Ornal (source unknown) that they were married in 1844. After reading all the quarters for 1844 a light bulb came on saying NO WAY did they marry then and have Arther in 1871. Have now read all quarters from 1871 back to 1854 and came up with a Sarah Ann Pines of Poplar (part of London) in 1868. What troubles me is that Henry Bowser is not in those records. Even read all B's trying to match to the "1 1149" which is where Sarah's reacords are found at Catherine House London. No luck. Her spouse should match. ... I am going to read beyond 1871 just in case they married2 later than Arthurs birth. info from pictures at Madelyns - Cousins on Bowers side, Harry, Maude, Annie, and Ada info from Duncan - written in Arthurs hand Sarah Ann Mothers name Henry Father Auburn St. Waterloo Rd. born at Dec 1st /71 Info from Britain - summer 1997 We took the picture of Art in uniform to the Royal Fusiliers Museum and talked to an archivist. It is NOT a Royal Fusilier uniform. Probably a Royal Marine. The helmet was not in use before 1891. Info from newspapers - researched in September 1997 The Victoria newspaper of June 1893 reports that the HMS Royal Arthur arrived from England on its maiden voyage with officers (who were listed in article)and 400 men. A Nov 1893 article in the same paper reports that 150 men were being sent overland from Vancouver to Halifax to be returned to England. They were sent with an officer. Info from Lois, Sept 21, 1997 She thought Grandpa entered the merchant marine at an early age as his father had remarried and his step mother was kind of rough on him. (Is there a diary? I did not get a chance to persue the brief mention of one) Sept. 25 Info from LDS, thanks to Rene Dusome. Arthur Edward P. Bowser listed in 1881 census as a 9 year old born in Lambeth Surrey, which is part of south London. 1881 census index has family listed in Surrey County (not Middlesex) Info from Auntie Gladys, May 6 2001; Thomas Croxford was part owner and manager of the Empress Theater, Victoria BC about 1908. update was likely arthur 27 feb 2014 Clen. 1881 England Census lists family A.E. 86 | Kate Mackenzie narrative - He was crazy to go to the gold rush in California. His mother said to him where will you get the money? I'll beg it I'll borrow it I'll steal it he said so they did the best they could for him. It was a poor crop that year. Uncle Robert had planned to study for the ministry and was going to the Minister to study Latin He gave that up and decided to make teaching his life work. Tom was gone 7 years. A stranger was coming in Our grandmother according to her custom went to put a fresh muslin cap but when the commotion started she came out without a cap at all. The prodigal had returned with his sack of gold minted into money and he had to get a ring for each of his sisters made out of his gold. In th course of time he married Grace Watson a girl from the neighborhood. Notes from Margaret McKinnon - Thomas McQueen b. 1838, could not have been a '49er. He might have gone to California, but the Gold rush was over by the early 1850's. (the question is where did he find gold) Further notes from Margaret - news[paper article found which indicates that Yes he did go to the gold fields. His wife's name was Mary and the girl who worked for her for years was called Hannah Fitz, I have forgotten the name of the man who worked for Uncle John.
